JR Rapier, a neighboring Texan native, is welcomed by Beals & Co. and Santa Fe Exports to her sophomore ‘Artist in Residence’ in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rapier is encouraged by nature in what she sees to paint, almost compelled to create a visualization of how she sees her natural elements. She isn’t concerned with what has happened or what will happen but mostly intrigued with what is happening; this painting in the present visualization is what compels Rapier to create her artworks.
Vast and broad brushstrokes fill the large 6 feet canvases of Rapier with sweeping movements. The paint is anchored with detailed depictions of branches and rich earth tones that blend colorfully beyond the entire canvas. Her work is a portrait of a tree, a rock and immediately the viewer realizes her love for nature in the singular. With a touch of fauvism and expressionism, the realistic creations of Rapier sing praises to greats such as O’Keeffe and Sargent, yet reads like Neruda and Adrienne Rich.
JR Rapier’s ‘Artist in Residence’ begins at the Four Seasons Rancho Encantado just minutes north of Santa Fe with an opening reception from 4-6pm on Friday, August 12th. Seven of her newest paintings will be on display and be significant of her current style and curation. The works will then be on display Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Fe Exports Art Tent during the equestrian and horse-jumping event, Hipico. All are welcome to both events and encouraged to meet JR Rapier.
